Background

Yawkey grew up in Boston, Massachusetts, but spent much of his childhood traveling to Georgetown. The coastal land served as a constant in his life, offering a peaceful retreat from the city. After inheriting the three islands, as well as a large sum of money, he purchased the Boston Red Sox baseball team and continued to spend his time traveling between the two contrasting locations. Tom and his wife enjoyed both parts of their life equally, embracing the peace of the Carolinas and the excitement of the city of Boston.

Upon his death, Yawkey donated the islands to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and established a trust to fund the conservation efforts. Today, the wildlife center is fully dedicated to research, conservation, and educational purposes, and are open for tours to the public multiple days a week.

How might a visual identity system for the Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center preserve the cultural identity of the wonder of wildlife and nature conservation as well as emphasize the honorable legacy of the passion and kindness of Tom Yawkey?

Process

Fundamentally, the primary mark is a fluid capital Y. It demonstrates a path of traveling from north to south, just as Yawkey lived between Boston and Georgetown. While Tom enjoyed the hustle and bustle of city life and MLB team ownership, the peace and serenity of the southern land is what truly grounded him as a person; the mark has a stronger lower base, portraying this message. Its fluidity also resembles the various paths of water the wetlands carry in the lowcountry.

Results

The visual brand points back to nature in every way, whether in the fluidity of the mark or the floral nature of the secondary mark. The primary mark is used as a window, revealing imagery of nature behind. Nature remains on the pedestal, just as Tom Yawkey intended.
