The Brief

Utilizing three custom typefaces, create a unique entity displaying the strengths of the typography, and incorporate them into a brand identity.

Process

Once I and my collaborators designed our resurrected typefaces, our three distinct styles were paired with one another to create something unique. Due to the midwestern roots of the typefaces Cordage and Chicago 38, our team decided to create something based in Chicago. 


After discovering the beautiful Donahue building in Printer’s Row, we created a typeface themed boutique hotel, deemed, The Ascender. The mark, utilizing the typeface, Dosage, by Kieran Wilson, resembles the front door of the Donahue building, home of the hotel. Cordage is used as a subheading, while Chicago 38 was utilized in the attached hotel restaurant and bar, Vantage.

Results

The Ascender Hotel exudes luxury, offering a comfortable experience for all who stay. The deep red and blue utilized in the brands for the hotel and bar communicate an elevated experience for Chicago locals and tourists.
