The Brief
Create a campaign existing to support literacy by designing book covers for four Barnes & Noble classic titles. The titles must support the chosen audience and message of the campaign. The campaign should include a distinctive title and branding.

Process
ProLiteracy works to improve literacy in adults, Literacy Mid South works with adults, specifically in Memphis, Tennessee, and Prison Book Program donates books to prison libraries to create a more robust array of options. Together, these three non-profits plus Barnes & Noble create an unstoppable force to raise awareness for illiteracy in american prisons.

Many existing campaigns support literacy in children, so adults were an obvious audience for this project. Further in my research, I found that 60% of those in American prisons are illiterate. This statistic became my passion, and led me to choose my partner non-profits to ground this campaign.

THE MARK
Looking at the makeup and structure of a book caused me to consider how books themselves are bound. Their binding doesn’t limit the imagination of those involved with the book, but the physical binding allows for greater usage by readers due to its practicality. Likewise, prisoners are bound, though they are free to engage with the greater world and beyond through reading.
I created the mark by thinking of a book’s pages being the foundation of the story, while the spine is beginning to be broken.

THE TITLES
Each of these books tells a story of resilience and prompts great imagination from the reader. Walden, A Life in the Woods and The Old Man and the Sea are more peaceful reads, while Treasure Island and The Call of the Wild are more adventurous in nature.
THE COVERS
Each front cover bears one half of the mark. The series is separated into two sets, each containing a novel more peaceful in nature paired with one more adventurous. The orientation and angle of the mark on each cover corresponds to its counterpart. Additionally, each spine bears one quarter of the mark so it will be displayed when the books are stored on a shelf.

Results
The books are displayed in Barnes and Noble, with areas to inform viewers about the mission of the campaign. To begin the campaign, Barnes and Noble will send many copies of each novel to a correctional institution in Memphis, Tennessee. The books will be delivered in a box with more information to give to residents.
